When you volunteer or shop at MCC Thrift, you are helping communities around the world have access to safe water.
Having a safe place to go to the washroom is an important part of ensuring that a community has access to clean water. It's also important in keeping girls' attendance rates at school high. In Uganda, MCC supports latrines and a girls' changing area at St. Johns school in Nyakabingo Village in Kasese. The changing room for girls also has space for washing and drying reusable pads. This project has proven remarkably effective at increasing enrollment at schools and at reducing absenteeism, sickness, and drop-outs. The project works with three schools in Kasese district of Uganda each year, constructing school rainwater catchment systems (gutters and small 2,000-5,000 litre tanks), handwashing stations and latrines. The MCC Raw Carrot site opened in May 2017 and has operated in partnership with Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church in Kitchener. The location produces 500 to 600 bags of soup per month.
For some staff, working at The Raw Carrot is a stepping stone to full-time employment elsewhere. They’re able to learn new skills and have confidence in a supportive environment. For others, The Raw Carrot is exactly the type of workplace that they may need for the rest of their lives—where they can be supported during work by staff who understand the social, emotional, or mental health needs that impact their ability to work on a daily basis. These are needs that are simply not met by most workplaces. “We’re still accomplishing our goal—to make soup—but we’re able to do that within a community that values people over efficiency. It’s all worth it, even if it takes us a little longer.” You can pick up a bag of Raw Carrot soup from our MCC Thrift shop! MCC – Relief, development, and peace in the name of Christ https://therawcarrot.com/ Background:
July 27, 2023, marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement. While the agreement ended three years of armed conflict, the war continues to this day. Families remain divided by a sealed border between the North and South. Those who can remember a united Korea are dying off. Yujin Kim, a young adult living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, reflects on how separation and longing are part of her family narrative, shaping her identity and motivating her to work for peace. -> For me, my family, friends and church, the 70th anniversary of the Korean War could also be called the 70th anniversary of longing for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Many individuals and organizations have long worked for peace in response to the prolonged conflict. This includes MCC’s peace and development projects, and support for a formal end to the Korean War. From 1953–1971, MCC operated the Mennonite Vocational School in South Korea, providing access to education and humanitarian assistance. Since 1995, MCC has also responded to ongoing humanitarian needs in North Korea by providing things like canned meat, relief kits and agricultural supplies. Because of the pandemic, MCC’s humanitarian work in the North has had to pause. But MCC continues its advocacy efforts, calling for a formal end to the conflict on the Korean Peninsula. MCC also advocates for more people-to-people engagement, including reunification for separated families. <- Read more at https://mcccanada.ca/stories/belonging-peace MCC – Relief, development, and peace in the name of Christ MCC’s school kits offer children who don’t have access to basic school supplies their educational essentials: pencils, pens, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, ruler, coloured pencils and four spiral-bound notebooks. Last year, MCC sent out nearly 90,000 school kits to children on five continents, but one of the countries that received the most was South Sudan.
You can read more about how students like John Gai Mabor, 17 at Rumbek Comboni Primary School in Rumbek, South Sudan, have been impacted by these kits at www.mcccanada.ca If you would like to help kids around the world receive the gift of school supplies, join the School Kit Challenge. During the months of July and August, we’re collecting 10,000 school kits to help 10,000 kids get an education You can give to MCC Canada through Grace Mennonite Church. Today, as a clean energy officer for MCC partner Score Against Poverty (SCORE) in Mwenezi District, Zimbabwe, she is doing just that. Her work is bringing technology like solar panels, fuel-efficient stoves and biodigesters to women in Mwenezi District, Zimbabwe. It’s solving problems at an individual level by making life easier for women, but also working to try and solve the larger problems communities are facing due to climate change. Episode 22 - Five lessons from refugee sponsorship Since 1979, hundreds of thousands of refugees have been sponsored, resettled, and built new lives in communities across Canada. Countless tears of happiness have been shed, countless Canadian flags have been waved, and countless cross-cultural meals have been shared. But, as we'll hear from one sponsorship group, there’s a whole lot more to it than that. Pastor Victor Dogos of N'djamena, Chad, is the first recipient of the newly established Michael J. Sharp Global Peacemaker Award. Created by MCC in 2023, the award acknowledges courageous peacemakers across the world.
As a Christian, Dogos works collaboratively with Catholics, Muslims, Protestants and tribal leaders in Chad to encourage people of all religions to live together in peace. National and community leaders call on him to resolve violent conflicts and intervene in situations that have the potential for bloodshed. “We serve a God of peace. So, working for peace is a profound commitment because we are acting as God acts. The way we talk, the way we carry ourselves in the world, the way we work – all of those things we do in the way God has modeled,” Dogos says. -> Conflict, climate change and hunger are putting lives at risk in countries across East Africa. The conflict in Sudan is making a fragile situation worse in many places. Millions of people have been forced from their homes and are in urgent need of basic necessities to survive. In East Africa, the rainy season has failed four years in a row. Crops, livestock and water supplies are decimated. That’s why the Government of Canada has just announced matching funds through the Humanitarian Coalition — which MCC participates in through our membership in Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Of the countries included in the match, MCC has food assistance responses in DR Congo, Ethiopia, Chad, Kenya and South Sudan. <- You can give to MCC Canada through Grace Mennonite Church. “Please indicate that the donation is for “MCC – Crisis in East Africa.” Thank you.
