A Harvest of Water

9/29/2021

From Bolivia to Kenya to Cambodia, farmers in MCC-supported projects are sharing how changes in rainfall and more frequent and severe weather due to climate change make it harder to grow enough food for their families.

In a new three-year project, MCC’s partner PRODII is helping farmers establish systems that trap water from springs higher in the mountains and funnel it down through pipes. The water is then used for crop irrigation or in the home. But that’s not all.

PRODII also is urging farmers to invest in efforts to plant trees and make other improvements in what program staff describe as water recharge zones, areas at higher altitudes above the springs. The idea is that preserving the groundwater up high will lead to a better supply of water in the springs below.

Canning meat for the world - Despite the disruptions of COVID-19, MCC meat canning helped families in places like Syria

9/15/2021

As the costs of COVID-19 began to mount across the globe, Syrians were already grappling with a multilayered crisis. Families, whose names aren’t used for security reasons, struggle daily. Some lost olive trees in the recent fires. Others have little safety net left after years of war and are grappling to make ends meet, a task more urgent as food prices rise.

The eyes of a father of six filled with tears on receiving canned meat, having relied on food low in nutrition to feed his family. “Thank you from the depth of the heart for giving us the cans of cooked chicken,” he says. “We have been able to cook them in many ways, you have brought joy to the hearts of children.... Look at them, how happy they are!”

Since 1946, volunteers have gathered to can meat through MCC’s mobile cannery, meat that MCC sends to hungry people across the globe.

'Thank you for not leaving us alone': Canned meat, relief kits reach Haiti earthquake survivors

9/8/2021

Boxes of canned meat and relief kits from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) brought joy and relief to recipients who are struggling to recover from the Aug. 14 earthquake that devastated the southern peninsula of Haiti.

The supplies were the first of any to reach Saint-Jean-de-Sud, a southwestern municipality, made up of several towns, on Aug. 31, more than two weeks after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred. Two thousand people died. It destroyed homes and buildings, leaving 650,000 people in need of emergency management assistance.

“Thank you for not leaving us alone,” one woman told Paul Shetler Fast, MCC’s health coordinator and former representative in Haiti who was present for the Aug. 31 distribution. “We've felt very alone these last days waiting after the earthquake, hoping someone would come, hoping someone would not forget us.”

  • Increase access to education, especially for low-income families, girls, ethnic minorities and children affected by disabilities, HIV or violence.
  • Improve the quality of education through professional development for teachers, educational materials and other support for schools.
  • Support vocational training to help youth find work in their home communities.
  • Promote peace clubs and other initiatives to help develop young people’s full potential as leaders.
