A Note about Niagara Gleaners: We Use Surplus Produce to Feed the Hungry!

7/29/2022

We provide daily meals to 17,000 people around the world. Each year we collect 1.8 million pounds
of fresh produce that is destined for landfills.
We receive and process 5000 – 8000 lbs of fresh produce each and every day.
Hundreds of volunteers wash, chop, dry and package this produce.
Together we produce over 5 million servings of dried fruit and vegetable mixes…and ship those meals to
people in need around the world
Niagara Gleaners is located at the Smithville Industrial Park.

Relief, Development and Podcast is a podcast from MCC. Every episode features a story from the field and a conversation with a special guest; we want to highlight the people and programs making an impact all around the world. Together we’ll hear stories about relief, development, and peace, and how your support for MCC helps to meet basic human needs and work for peace and justice.

Season 3, episode 10: The hunger crisis / Andy Harrington from CFGB (Released July 6, 2022)
Right now, around the world hundreds of millions of people go to bed hungry. 50 million have exhausted all options and are teetering on the edge of famine. That’s up from 27 million in 2019 before the pandemic began. A substantial increase. This is a bonus episode about the hunger crisis. Our guest is Andy Harrington, Executive Director of Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB).

Weather patterns are changing.

"These are the remains of the gardens. These are the remains of the plants in the gardens that were completely stripped out by the floods." - Hangala Bornface, Zambia
Hangala Bornface, an environmental protection officer of MCC partner Choma Child Development of Zambia’s Brethren in Christ Church, stands in an area of Zambia’s Southern Province where the usual danger is drought.
Indeed, early in 2022, the rains were delayed. But then, the dry land was inundated with sudden, strong flooding – washing away banana plants, fruit trees and other crops. “This is posing a serious threat of hunger and food shortages in this community,” he says.

From Argentina to Zambia, the story is the same: Weather patterns are changing.
We care about climate change because we care about neighbours, here and across the world, all made in God's image. May we open our hearts to their stories.

Did you know that MCC has a Peace and Justice Office in Ottawa?

The Peace & Justice Office is the Mennonite Central Committee’s voice to the Canadian government, advocating for policies that support our work of relief, development, and peacebuilding. We also inform Canadians about political issues and how they can get involved.

As we respond to the conflict in Ukraine and other conflicts around the world, we ask the Canadian government to respond with nonviolence at every level of response, through encouraging the use of tools such as diplomacy, disarmament and conflict resolution at the international level and through providing more substantial support for non-violent locally-led peacebuilding.

Join us in asking for more substantial and comprehensive support for non-violent locally-led peacebuilding within Canada’s Official Development Assistance.
